Skin Care, What's Worth the Price and What Isn't

Good makeup application always starts with good skincare. Skin care should be an essential part of someones daily routine to keep them looking fresh and young. With that being said, does skin care really have to be expensive? This is something I have gone back and forth with. I have gone through phases where I only bought high end skin care from Sephora, and other phases where Target was my go to place. I am the type of person that wants my face to be clean and moisturized as possible. I have occasional breakouts but I usually just let them heal on their own. Hopefully this blog post helps in deciding what products are worth the cash and what products you can pinch your pennies on.

Step 1: Remove Makeup
Palmers Skin Therapy Cleansing Oil $9
The most important step to a skin care routine is removing your makeup. I used to be a die hard makeup wipe fan until I discovered cleansing oils. Cleansing oils are a lot less harsh than makeup wipes and offer benefits for your skin. My current favorite cleansing oil is the Palmers Skin Therapy Cleansing Oil. I actually just got this product less than a week ago and I am already obsessed. I actually look forward to taking my makeup off because of this product. This oil is infused with Cocoa Butter, Vitamin C, and Rose hip oil. These ingredients are great for dry skin because they add moisture back into the skin, while makeup wipes are stripping moisture away. This product is comparable to the Clinique Cleansing Balm which I used previous to the Palmers. I believe the Palmers oil is much easier to work with and is much more sanitary since it has a pump applicator instead of just dipping your fingers in a tub of product. I definitely recommend this product if you are looking for a more gentle way to remove your makeup but still want to be quick and effective.

Step 2: Cleanse
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser $9.50
I have always believed in drugstore cleansers no matter what. I believe if I am using a product every day two times a day it makes no sense to buy the most expensive version. My current favorite cleanser is an oldie but goodie, the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. This cleanser is a best seller and for good reason! It is advertised to work for every skin tone and leaves your face clean without irritating our drying it out. You can buy a 16 oz. bottle of Cetaphil for less than $10. If that isn't a steal I don't know what is.

Step 3: Tone
Thayers Witch Hazel $7.50
Toner is something I always knew I was supposed to add in my skin care routine but never got around to it until very recently. There are many high end toners that claim to do all sorts of things to your skin. These are very unnecessary, a toner is only there to close your pores after cleansing. I like to use Witch hazel as a toner because it is a natural astringent and the less chemicals used on the skin the better (...I may have just gone through an all natural stage too.) Thayers Witch Hazel is also an oldie but a goodie. Save your money and buy a cheaper alternative to toner... theres no need to shell out the cash for a product that has one simple function.

Step 4: Serum
Mario Badescu Anti-Acne Serum  $20
Sonia Kashuk Radient Boost Facial Oil $16
Serum, Serum, Serum... This one I debated for a while before deciding what the best product to include in this post. Truth is a love serums, especially high end serums. I think if you have the money to spend on skin care, spend it on serums and face masks. That is because 1. they last forever and 2. skin reacts the best to these. That being said, if you don't have the cash to go to Sephora for serum, head to Marshalls or T.J. Maxx. You may not think discount stores have good products but the last time I went to Marshalls I loaded up on my favorite Retinol products for a lot cheaper than Sephora's price tag.

Anyways, you came here for product suggestions. My favorite high end serum is the Mario Badescu Anti Acne Serum. I put that on everyday morning and night. It contains Salicylic Acid which clarifies and exfoliates pore clogging sebum which is what causes break outs. I have noticed any acne I used to get has diminished since this product stops acne before it even starts.

My favorite low end serum is the Sonia Kashuk Radient Boost facial oil. This product was recommended to my by a close friend that also has dry skin. She said it worked wonders for her dry skin so I figured why not try it out for $16. This oil contains a blend of 9 oils that all help with anti aging and hydrating the skin. I love using this oil morning and night on days I am feeling extra dry. I also sometimes mix this oil with my foundation on days I want to look a little bit more dewy. It gives me that "glow from within" look that has been very on trend lately.

Step 5: Moisturize
Ponds Nourishing Moisturizing Cream $8.50
Last but not least, it's time to moisturize. My long time moisturizer has been the Ponds Nourishing Moisturizing cream. This moisturizer is like an old comfy sweater. I always try to stray away from it with new expensive fancy moisturizers but I always go back to my handy Pond's. Thats because it's so affordable and it just works. This product is advertised towards people with dry to very dry skin which is perfect for myself. I use this moisturizer every morning and let it soak in for a few minutes before I start my makeup routine.

Step 6: Face mask
Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask $58
Now this isn't technically a step in my skin care routine but it is one my favorite aspects of skin care! Face Masks are the other product I really splurge on. That is because typically more expensive face masks have the best quality products. My absolute favorite face mask is the Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask. This mask purifies, decongests and hydrates your face all at once. This mask is literally the holy grail of all face masks and if I could recommend it a thousand times I would. This mask is a whopping $60 but I have had mine for nearly a year and I'm not even finished with half of it yet! This may sound a little bit ridiculous but face masks should be thought of as an investment. When you are thinking of purchasing a face mask think about how often you are going to use it, how much product you are going to use each time, and what type of ingredients are in it. This Peter Thomas Roth mask is worth every penny you spend on it.
